Funding Snapshot
Grant: Up to 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $175,000
We will fund the creation of a plan that identifies and prioritizes opportunities to revitalize your community’s brownfields. This funding helps Canadian cities and communities of all sizes plan to remediate and rehabilitate their brownfields.
What is a brownfield?
A brownfield is an abandoned, vacant, derelict or underutilized commercial, institutional or industrial property where past actions have resulted in actual or perceived contamination or a threat to public health and safety, and where there is an active potential for redevelopment.
Your plan should include a framework of approaches (e.g., incentive programs) that promote the remediation, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse and overall improvement of brownfield properties in your community. It must include the following elements, which may be drawn from an existing sustainable community plan or strategy:
- A vision
- Environmental, social and economic objectives and targets
- A list of the actions required to achieve your remediation goals and targets, including:
- Specific tasks and who (job role/person) will accomplish them
- An implementation timeline
- Estimated costs
- Anticipated sustainable development that will take place on the land after it is remediated (e.g., energy efficient buildings, a renewable energy installation)
We prefer initiatives that lead to concrete actions and demonstrate many of the following characteristics:
- The initiative incorporates the development or application of new knowledge, policy, practices or technologies
- There are built-in mechanisms that will encourage the replication of the initiative (e.g., a partnership with a regional government)
- The initiative has the potential to generate significant environmental results, as well as economic and social benefits
- The initiative leverages partnerships and other sources of funding
