Moving toward a brighter future

This award recognizes a program or project that demonstrates innovative approaches to decarbonize and increase the resiliency of transportation systems. Strong applications will present solutions that can be replicated in other municipalities across Canada.

Examples of eligible initiatives:

• Programs and infrastructure focused on transportation demand management, including a shift from private vehicles to active transportation and/or public transit.
• Programs and infrastructure that encourage the transition to zero emission vehicles.
• Programs and infrastructure focused on improving equitable access to low-emission transportation (active transportation, public transit, shared ZEVs, etc.).
• Net-zero transportation master plans.

Who can apply?

All Canadian municipalities and their partners are eligible to apply for an FCM Sustainable Communities Award.

Learn about our 2022 climate change mitigation category winner, a group of municipalities in the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine region teamed up with transit organization RÉGÎM to create a project that reduces the need for private vehicles by using Mobility as a Service (MaaS) technology to offer electric car and bike sharing, taxi services and other transport options. This project also included the municipal purchase of EVs. 

Learn about the Region of Waterloo, ON, a 2020 co-winner in the transportation category, and its ION system to connect the Region’s three urban centres with reliable, fast transportation that helps reduce GHG emissions and urban sprawl, while increasing investment and development in the rapidly growing region.
