What is the REC program?

The Regional Energy Coach (REC) program is a nationwide initiative designed to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in affordable housing . The program provides expert coaching, technical support, and funding guidance to housing providers.

Who can benefit from the REC program?

The program primarily supports municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and housing cooperatives that are engaged in or planning energy-efficient retrofits or new constructions of affordable housing.  

What services do Regional Energy Coaches provide?

Regional Energy Coaches offer a range of services, including: 

  • Walkthrough energy  assessments 
  • Planning for energy efficiency within a retrofit or new build project  
  • Support identifying energy saving opportunities 
  • Technical advice on energy-saving technologies and solutions 
  • Assistance with identifying funding opportunities and support with funding applications for energy efficiency projects

Is there a cost to participate in the REC program?

Participation in the REC program is provided at no cost to eligible affordable housing providers. The program is co-funded by FCM’s Green Municipal Fund and the Community Housing Transformation Centre and delivered by the following partners: 

  • Community Housing Transformation Centre 
  • BC Non-Profit Housing Association 
  • Manitoba Non-Profit Housing Association 
  • Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada 
  • The Clean Foundation 
  • Fédération des coopératives d'habitation de Québec

What types of projects does the REC program support?

The REC program supports a wide range of projects aimed at improving energy efficiency, including: 

  • Minor to deep energy retrofits 
  • Installation of renewable energy systems 
  • Upgrades to heating and cooling systems  Insulation and weatherization improvements 
  • Net zero or net zero ready new builds
How does the REC program help with funding?

RECs assist housing providers in identifying and applying for funding opportunities, including grants, loans and other incentives from various sources of funding including government agencies, utility companies, and others. Coaches also help providers understand how to effectively stack these funds to maximize their project's financial feasibility. 

Can the REC program support a project in any stage of development?

Yes, REC coaches can support projects at various stages, from initial planning and feasibility studies to implementation and post-project evaluation.

You are responsible for moving your project forward and identifying sustainability champions at the staff and board level. A REC is a skilled professional who will guide you towards achieving your sustainability goals through personalized support.

When should I seek out REC support?  
  • If you need help identifying how to integrate energy efficiency into your retrofit or new build project
  • If you need help in identifying the expertise needed to take on an energy efficient project and building your project team
  • If you are trying to identify funding sources for your energy efficient retrofit or new build
  • If a GMF/SAH Funding Officer recommended the support of a REC to improve the environmental outcomes of your project
