The Town of View Royal is one of 13 municipalities in Vancouver Island's Capital Regional District (CRD). The Town developed integrated corporate and community greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction plans to meet its commitments under the provincial Climate Action Charter. The plans identify local emission sources and set out strategies to conserve energy and reduce GHG emissions. In the spring of 2011, the town council endorsed a corporate objective of reducing emissions by six to 10 per cent from 2008 levels by 2018. The community plan recommends emissions reductions of 12 per cent below 2007 levels by 2017. Proposed reduction initiatives include changes to the Town's vehicle fleet, mechanical and plumbing system upgrades in community buildings, and encouraging pedestrian — and transit-oriented designs in new developments.
